Ric Ocasek, leader and singer of The Cars band, was found dead on Sunday, US police said.

The New York Police Department said in a statement that it received a call near 20:00 GMT "by an unconscious man on East 19 Street . His death was declared at the scene."

The singer's 75-year-old body showed no signs of violent death, US media reported.

Under the leadership of Ocasek, The Cars incorporated extravagant electronic effects of the new wave style to pop songs of classical structure. Among his successes, You Might Think , Shake It Up and Drive stood out in the 1980s.

After separating in 1988, the band returned in 2011 after Ocasek wrote new songs that he thought would sound better if he played them with his former bandmates, the USA Today newspaper wrote.

The Cars was included last year in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Bon Jovi, Moody Blues , Dire Straits , Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
