Dear to the hearts of the French, the baguette has long not exceeded the symbolic bar of the euro.

However, as BFMTV reports, that era may well be over.

Some brands are already posting an increase in bread prices, up to 1.30 euros or even 1.50 euros.

"The baker who does not increase his baguette, he will close," asserts the president of the National Confederation of French Bakery and Pastry (CNBPF).

Rise in the price of wheat, but not only

Bakeries have found themselves in difficulty since the beginning of the year in the face of inflation.

Wheat prices had started to rise as early as last year, but were again impacted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Rising energy costs are also a big factor, with bakeries needing to run their ovens on gas or electricity.

Logical consequence: we can expect a rise in the price of baguettes of 10 to 15%, or even 30% if the price of energy continues to climb in the months to come.

Finally, the cost of paper packaging has also soared (+34% in one year on cardboard), following the price of raw materials, and the majority of foodstuffs used to prepare sandwiches are increasingly expensive.

Since January, the price of butter has risen by nearly 10%, which is reflected in the prices of pastries and pastries.
