Volvo, 50 years of accidentology -

DR

The team has been in operation since 1970. Whenever an accident involving a Volvo vehicle occurs around Göteborg (Sweden), day or night, its members quickly get to the scene as soon as they are informed.

Upon arrival, they begin an investigation and document the course of events in as much detail as possible.

Work continues back in the office: the team requests publicly available police reports, contacts the driver, and examines the vehicle when possible.

She also tries to understand how the driver experienced the accident, a process that involves the participation of behavioral scientists from the Volvo Safety Center.

Finally, the people involved in the accident are asked to provide their medical records, which will make it possible to note the injuries suffered.

This information will be analyzed by experts in biomechanics who will work in collaboration with physicists to understand the exact causes of injuries.

All data and knowledge collected is coded and made anonymous.

The findings of this research are shared with Volvo's product development teams, who use these findings to develop and implement new technologies in future vehicles.

Each year, 30 to 50 accidents are thus "dissected".
