A case of Zika virus infection was also reported in Daejeon.

According to the Daejeon Institute of Health and Environment today (3rd), Zika virus was detected in the sample of a patient who was being treated at a hospital for fever and rash symptoms after a trip to Southeast Asia in the middle of last month.

This is the first time Zika virus infection has been confirmed in Daejeon.

Zika virus infection, a third-grade legal infectious disease, is transmitted by the bite of a virus-infected vector mosquito, and symptoms such as fever and joint pain appear along with a rash.

Although mortality is extremely low, infection during pregnancy can cause birth defects in the fetus, such as microcephaly.

Nam Soong-woo, head of the Institute for Health and Environment, said, "Recently, overseas travel is on the rise, leading to an increase in the influx of infectious diseases overseas." said.

Meanwhile, while the number of dengue fever patients in Southeast Asia has been rapidly increasing recently, three cases of dengue fever have been reported in Daejeon this year.
