Dal Kwan, who was called the 'hero military dog', will be discharged from the military at the end of this year by rescuing a middle school girl who disappeared in the mountains three years ago in 11 days.

The 32nd Division of the Army recently announced that Dalgwani, a reconnaissance dog belonging to the Mobile Battalion, has been discharged on December 1st.

Dal Kwan is a male German Shepherd, born in 2012 at the Army Dog Training Center in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, and after 20 weeks of dog training, in November of the following year, he received a scouting dog mission and was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Battalion.

Army dogs are evaluated for qualification around 7 months of age, and only about 30% of all military dog candidates pass this process.

Dal Kwan-i received a lot of attention as the first contributor to the successful search operation of Jo Eun-nuri (then 14 years old) in 2019.

On July 23 of that year, Cho Yang lost his way and disappeared at the source of Musimcheon, Gadeok-myeon, Sangsang-gu, Cheongju-si.

At that time, the police and the military conducted a large-scale search by employing 5,800 people each year, but could not find Yang's whereabouts.

It had been 11 days since Miss Cho disappeared.

It is said that Dal Kwan-i took the body odor of Jo Yang during the search and took the 'report' posture that he takes when finding a rescued person.

At that time, Private Kim Jae-hyeon, who was holding Dal-gwan's collar, conveyed this fact to Sergeant Park Sang-jin, and after searching the area, he found Jo Yang in the corner of a rock about 3 meters away.

It is the opinion of the military officials at the time that Dal Kwan's performance was not a coincidence.

This is because he was a veteran military dog who excelled in various maneuver training and military dog competitions due to his cleverness and good memory.

He has won the Outstanding Military Dog Award a whopping four times.

Meanwhile, Dal Kwan-i's rather unusual past history was re-examined, which is the fact that Dal-gwan-i was a deserted dog.

In February 2014, Dal Kwan-i, who broke the wire mesh of a military vehicle and escaped, was caught in the forest within a day. After a while, Dal-gwan was active in various places such as the search operation of Chaoyang. There were even jokes about ',' Gaegwacheonseon'.

Dal Kwan, who is in his 70s as a human, has not yet had a major problem with his search ability, but was judged to be unable to perform normal service due to his lack of physical strength.

Dal Kwan, who has been active as a veteran military dog for 9 years, is classified as a 'retired dog' after being discharged and plans to spend his old days at the Chuncheon Military Dog Training Center, where he was born.
