Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated in the Scottish city of Glasgow for the country's independence from Britain.

The protest march is said to have been attended by between 30,000 and 35,000 people, as the British Guardian reports. It has been the largest gathering of pro-independence activists since Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a second referendum.

Sturgeon had announced at the end of April, even before the next parliamentary election to hold an independence referendum. There should be a choice between Brexit as part of Britain and a future for Scotland as an independent European nation. She wants to initiate the necessary legislation, she said. The next parliamentary elections in Scotland are scheduled for 6 May 2021.

Demonstration in Glasgow

In a first referendum on independence in 2014, a scant majority of Scots (55 percent) voted against leaving the United Kingdom. Even more clearly, however, the Scots argued for the Brexit referendum in 2016 to see Britain stay in the EU (62 percent).

With thousands of blue-and-white flags and bagpipe musicians, the demonstrators have now expressed their will to stay in the EU while being independent of Britain. The organization "All Under One Banner", which hosted the demonstration, announced nationwide protests in the coming months, according to "Guardian".
