The Institute for Quality and Economics in the Health Sector in Germany said that “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome” means the occurrence of a narrowing of the carpal tunnel in the wrist, indicating that the narrowing of this tunnel causes a narrowing of a nerve that feeds certain areas of the hand.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage in the wrist through which the median nerve and tendons that control finger movement pass.

The institute explained that carpal tunnel syndrome is often due to excessive stress on the wrist, for example due to working for a long time using a computer mouse.

Other risk factors include rheumatism, diabetes, kidney failure, injuries, fluid retention and obesity.

The institute indicated that carpal tunnel syndrome can be combated through applications of cold and heat, such as cold compresses and a warm water bath, as well as baths alternating between warm and cold water.

If these measures do not work to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, then a doctor should be consulted.

It can be treated with cortisone or a splint, while in severe cases surgery can be used to widen the carpal tunnel.
