Netanyahu considered the Court of Justice’s pleadings a Palestinian attempt to dictate the results of the political settlement without negotiations (French)

Today, Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a sharp attack on the International Court of Justice, coinciding with the launch of week-long hearings on the legal consequences of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories at the court’s headquarters in The Hague.

In a statement today, Netanyahu's office considered that the International Court of Justice hearing "comes within the framework of the Palestinian attempt to dictate the results of the political settlement without negotiations."

The statement said that Israel "does not recognize the legitimacy of the International Court of Justice hearing" on Israel's practices in the occupied Palestinian territories, considering the scheduled pleadings of 52 countries on that matter a "media circus" and called on the court to refrain from participating.

The Israeli statement coincided with the start of the Court of Justice hearings on the legal consequences of the occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967. The sessions are scheduled to continue until next Monday, with the participation of 52 countries, along with the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union.

The President of the Court, Nawaf Salam, began today’s session by mentioning the names of the countries that will submit their interventions, led by Palestine, where each country will provide a half-hour oral intervention regarding its point of view on procedural issues, and the Court is scheduled to issue at a later time an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of the occupation.

It is noteworthy that the United Nations General Assembly asked the court, in 2022, to issue an advisory or non-binding opinion regarding the occupation. Although Israel has ignored such views in the past, it may increase political pressure regarding its ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.
