Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that any comprehensive military operations in Gaza would have catastrophic humanitarian repercussions, while his Saudi counterpart said that an unrestrained Israeli response would inflame feelings, in their comments on the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip during the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

Shukri said that Egypt does not intend to prepare any safe places for civilians in Gaza, and that talk of building a wall on Egypt’s border with Gaza is just an assumption, and what is being done is only maintenance operations.

Shukri added that there are rights for Palestinians and Israelis, and we acknowledge the rights of everyone to live in security and peace within their national identities, noting that there are matters related to the right to self-defense, as well as the right to resist occupation and self-determination.

Security of the entire region

For his part, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said in his speech at the Munich conference that the priority now must be to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, a ceasefire, and the arrival of aid to Gaza.

The Saudi minister added that the only way to stabilize the region is through establishing a Palestinian state.

He said, “We pointed out from the beginning that an unrestrained Israeli response would inflame feelings, and we must understand that we are not only dealing with a moral issue, but rather it is related to the security of the entire region.”

In turn, Belgian Foreign Minister Hajja Habib said in the same session that we must deal with the roots of the current crisis and work to avoid it, stressing that the solution to the current crisis cannot be military alone.

Lahbib pointed out that Brussels has adopted a balanced position on the crisis from day one.
