The famous polar explorer Malory organized dozens of expeditions to Greenland, as well as to the Arctic regions of Canada, Alaska and Russian Chukotka. At one time, Malory became famous for his book in defense of the Inuit, The Last Kings of Thule, which was published in 1955.

In 1992, Malory founded the State Polar Academy in St. Petersburg and became its honorary president for life until the academy was dissolved in 2015.

On October 31, 2023, at the age of 77, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Pyotr Baklanov died. His death was reported by the Pacific Institute of Geography, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
