- He completely destroyed my reputation. "I'm here to restore my good reputation and to stop him from continuing to lie about me," Carroll, now 80, said as she testified at the trial.

Trump appeared in the courtroom for the last two days of the trial, on Thursday to briefly testify and plead not guilty. He says he never heard of Carroll and that she made everything up to make money off her memoirs.

Trump must now pay more than 83 million dollars in damages, corresponding to almost 900 million Swedish kronor, according to the judgment that was hammered out in a federal court in New York.

Already convicted of assault

The judge has pointed out that the jury should see the defamation case as a separate trial, as Trump has already been convicted of sexual assault.

Trump and Carroll had a personal conversation at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York sometime in late 1995 or early 1996. After the conversation, Trump uninvitedly followed the woman to a fitting room where the assault took place.

Another court in May awarded damages of $5 million for a similar allegation between the same parties. That decision has been appealed by Trump.
