Senegal: Prime Minister and candidate Amadou Ba rules out any postponement of the presidential election

In Senegal, the controversy is growing concerning a potential postponement of the presidential election on February 25, which Prime Minister Amadou Ba and candidate for the supreme office, has clearly ruled out. The rumor is fueled by the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry concerning suspicions of corruption within the Constitutional Council in the electoral process.

Prime Minister Amadou Ba, who is also the candidate of the Benno Bokk Yakaar presidential coalition, wanted to be reassuring during an interview with the Senegalese media Dakaractu. The presidential election “

will be held on the due date

”, he declared, a clear response to the rumors of postponement of the vote which are growing in the country.

At the origin of this rumor is the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry requested by the deputies of the Senegalese democratic party, the PDS, concerning the process which led to the exclusion of their candidate,

Karim Wade

, from the list contenders for the presidential election.

They suspect conflicts of interest, alleged corruption and violations of the secrecy of deliberations of the Constitutional Council as well as cases of collusion with candidates. Some political actors believe that the election could then be postponed, pending clarification by this parliamentary commission of inquiry.

However, Prime Minister Amadou Ba clarified that the administrative authorities are already hard at work to continue the electoral process.
