The soldiers are back in Sollefteå. 24 years ago, the city's two regiments were shut down, despite major protests. But in 2020 came the decision to let I21 be resurrected as a regiment, something that is welcomed by many.

- It is the most positive thing that has happened in Sollefteå in 30 years. It is part of our identity to be a military city, says Johan Andersson (C), municipal councilor Sollefteå.

The revived regiment now has a platoon consisting of 38 conscripts. Considerably fewer than the 1,500 who were trained each year in Sollefteå in the past.

- I think it was wrong to drop the defense and change direction. I wish there were many more of us, says Pär Svensson, company manager at 121.

"Must be prepared to give life"

The conscripts on I21 have now reached the halfway point in their training. Sometimes they think about what they are being trained for.

- We may have to stand on the front line and be prepared to give our lives. Sometimes you have to confront that thought, says Edvin Sikström, conscription officer.
