DRC: questions within the majority around the new alliance of 100 deputies

Ministers Vital Kamerhe, Julien Paluku, Jean-Lucien Bussa, and Tony Kanku, leaders of the main political groups within the majority, launched, on Tuesday January 23 in Kinshasa, an alliance bringing together more than 100 national deputies out of the 500 that must count the Assembly.

This initiative - internal to the majority - is intended to be open to any membership.

Officially, the UDPS, the presidential party, does not oppose the formation of this new bloc.

However, some close to Félix Tshisekedi question the advisability of launching this initiative.

For Vital Kamerhe (our photo), the objective of this alliance is to “strengthen cohesion and bring discipline” within President Tshisekedi’s political family.

In the president's entourage, some describe the initiative, led in particular by Vital Kamerhe, as “

agitation

”.

A member of Félix Tshisekedi’s cabinet told RFI: “

It’s the race for positioning.

It's the race for who wants to be head of government or president of institutions.

It’s overkill

.”

Strengthen cohesion

Accusations categorically rejected by Vital Kamerhe.

He says the goal is to “

strengthen cohesion and bring discipline

” within the president’s political family.

One of his close friends even goes so far as to defend the idea that the Sacred Union, the presidential platform, designed before the electoral deadlines, was a “

catch-all

”.

This same person close to Kamerhe cites as an example the fact that Félix Tshisekedi did not entrust him with the direction of his electoral campaign.

The other reason given is the observation of a scattering of votes following the legislative elections, with several political groups having barely one or two deputies each.

A homogeneous block

According to him, the work of those in charge of identifying the majority could take two or three months if he had to satisfy all parties.

Thus created, the new alliance positions itself as a homogeneous bloc alongside the UDPS and its satellite parties and groupings.

Assured of having a majority in Parliament, Félix Tshisekedi is not forced to base himself solely on the figures, confides one of his advisors, especially since he has a fairly wide margin of maneuver.

It will also take into account the internal political balance.

But the issues are not limited to the National Assembly.

This new alliance also seems well positioned to control at least eight provinces, out of the 26 in the DRC, with the possibility of electing governors and presidents of provincial assemblies.
