Now it remains to be seen when and how their parliament chooses to vote on the issue.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also needs to formally ratify Sweden's application before the process is fully settled in the country.

Regarding Turkey's decision, the actions of Swedish politicians may also have played a role, Mats Knutson believes.

In the past, several politicians have criticized Turkey for a lack of human rights and democracy, but that has changed.
