Evan Gershkovich, “Wall Street Journal” correspondent in Russia, detained for 300 days

Detained in Moscow's Lefortovo prison, American Evan Gershkovich is the first Western journalist in modern Russian history to be placed behind bars.

Moscow accuses him of espionage, which his newspaper completely denies.

This crime is punishable by twenty years in prison.

Negotiations for the release of Evan Gershkovich are still not successful.

During his annual conference at the Kremlin in December 2023, Vladimir Putin said he “

hoped

” for an agreement on this subject.

He therefore confirmed, for the first time, that contacts were in progress.

The fact remains that the White House spokesperson then declared: “

We have made multiple offers.

There is a substantial offer that we made a few weeks ago

.”

Moscow rejected everything

Moscow has so far rejected everything.

The American ambassador to Russia was able to visit the imprisoned correspondent last Friday.

Lynne Tracy then indicated on Telegram channel that he remained “

unwavering and grateful for the support of his friends, family and supporters

”.

The new deadline for his pre-trial detention is January 30.

Under the Soviet Union

The last time a Western journalist was jailed in Moscow on charges of espionage was under the Soviet Union in 1986. Nicholas Daniloff was jailed in retaliation for the arrest of a spy.

He was traded after a few weeks.
