“By completely distorting the thoughts of the President of Azerbaijan about the historical facts related to the territories of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the High Representative is provoking militarization and an aggressive policy towards Azerbaijan,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Baku also recalled that Borrell expressed solidarity with France regarding the expulsion of Azerbaijani diplomats.

This, according to the Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is tantamount to justifying the illegal actions of the expelled French diplomats in Azerbaijan.

On the evening of January 22, after a meeting of the EU Council in Brussels, Josep Borrell threatened Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that his “territorial claims” would lead to serious consequences for relations between Baku and Brussels.

On December 26, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry declared two employees of the French Embassy in Baku persona non grata.

The next day, the French Foreign Ministry rejected the accusations brought by Azerbaijan against two embassy employees and responded by declaring two Azerbaijani diplomats persona non grata.

Ilham Aliyev noted that France is “preparing the ground” for destabilizing the situation in the South Caucasus and a new armed conflict in the region.
