In recent years, police camera surveillance has increased in Malmö.

During 2024, the number of camera points in Malmö will increase from 80 to 120, an increase of 50 percent.

- I would say at least 120, says Jimmy Lindin, section manager for camera surveillance in the police region south.

- We managed to get rid of a criminal network thanks to the cameras, says Johannes Dontsios, municipal police at Lindängen.

Disrupt the open drug trade

At Lindängen, which is a particularly vulnerable area, there are currently three cameras, but two more will soon be added.

- We have worked hard on this.

For ten years, we worked on setting up new cameras in the center of Lindängen to disrupt the open drug trade in the square.

But Johannes Dontsios points out that the cameras are part of the police's work and not the whole solution.

- Of course, there have been several targeted efforts to get rid of the drug trade.

"A political driving force"

In mid-2022, there were 130 camera points in the entire police region South, which includes Blekinge, Kalmar, Kronoberg and Skåne counties.

In the same year, Malmö had 58 camera points.

In 2024, there will be 120 camera points in the municipality.

Why this increase?

- It is a good complement to our business and we see that we can prevent and prevent crime.

Then there is also a political driving force in this, says Johannes Dontsios.

In October 2023, the government presented a new camera offensive against the criminal networks.

Among other things, it includes a goal that there should be 2,500 cameras up in Sweden by the end of the year, a goal that means that the number of cameras will be fivefold.
