DRC: CENI publishes provisional results of provincial legislative elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission made public, on the night of Sunday January 21 to Monday January 22, 2024, the provisional results of the provincial legislative elections.

According to data provided by Denis Kadima Kazadi, president of the Céni, 688 candidates were proclaimed among the approximately 40,000 applications registered.

For political parties, the major issue lies in winning control of the provinces

Political forces engage in a fierce struggle to dominate provincial assemblies, ultimately aiming to obtain a greater number of provincial governors.

According to the provisional results, Félix Tshisekedi is assured of controlling several provinces, whether through his party, the UDPS, or thanks to the allied parties forming part of what we call here the "mosaic", that is- that is to say the satellite political groupings which revolve around the UDPS.

Where the UDPS and its mosaic are not in the lead, it is a grouping of the Sacred Union, the vast political platform including heavyweights such as Jean-Pierre Bemba, Vital Kamerhe and Modeste Bahati, which takes first place.

Another challenge was taking control of Kinshasa.

Here, the UDPS and its allies come out on top, and the city, home to around 18 million inhabitants, seat of institutions and historically stronghold of the opposition, cannot escape Félix Tshisekedi.

Another challenge was the Katanga space, the stronghold of Moïse Katumbi.

According to figures published by the CENI, candidates from the presidential movement come out on top in almost all of the five provinces in this geographical area.

For Félix Tshisekedi, it will remain to play the arbiter in the great battle between his allies to take the head of the provincial assemblies and provincial governments.
