Agents of the maritime service of the

Civil Guard

and

Maritime Rescue

have recovered the body of a young migrant on the beach of Ceuta.

The deceased - of Algerian origin -, along with another companion, tried to cross from a nearby beach in Morocco.

The companion who was swimming with him could be rescued alive.

The search operation has been carried out in the southern bay of Ceuta.

The operation was mobilized after the presence of two migrants at sea was reported, who were attempting to cross from Morocco despite the storm hitting the Ceuta coast.

One of them was rescued alive after a dangerous rescue maneuver activated when migrants were detected at sea.

Subsequently, a Maritime Rescue helicopter located a body floating very close to the shore on the Ribera de Ceuta beach.

The agents of the Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Civil Guard, with the help of a person who was near the place of discovery, managed to recover the lifeless body of the young migrant, who was wearing a pair of fins and a suit. of neoprene with which he had tried, without success, to reach the beach.

For his part, the young Algerian who survived owes his life to the quick intervention of the rescue services.

This new death adds to the already tragic figure of the migratory route that separates the Moroccan coast from the Spanish coast in Ceuta, a journey of just 7 kilometers.

So far in 2024, there are already three deceased migrants found in Ceuta.

The humanitarian organization

Caminando Fronteras

reports that in 2023 6,618 people died in their attempt to reach Spain, a figure that doubles the 2,390 deaths recorded in 2022, with the Atlantic route being the most lethal, originating in countries such as Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco.
