Group A streptococcus is a common bacterium that can cause, among other things, tonsillitis, impetigo and scarlet fever. In rare cases, however, they can cause invasive medical conditions such as sepsis, for which it is important to get treatment quickly.

Last year, the number of reported cases of invasive A streptococcus increased throughout Sweden, including in Västerbotten. In the county, 32 cases were confirmed, which is the highest since the disease became notifiable in 2004.

"Why invasive cases are increasing right now is not entirely clear, but it may be due to lower immunity in the population after the pandemic when fewer people were infected and gained immunity," says Maria Marklund.

Should seek care in case of suspected infection

If you suspect that you have an infection with streptococcus, such as tonsillitis, Region Västerbotten urges you to contact your healthcare provider.

"We don't want to scare anyone, but if you get generally affected by a sore throat, you should seek help immediately," says Maria Marklund.
