Blinken will discuss "several areas related to bilateral and regional cooperation, including the final steps for Turkey to ratify Sweden's accession to NATO," said Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department.

The trip to Europe and the Middle East, which also includes visits to Greece, Israel, the West Bank and the United States, was to begin on January 4 and last until January 11.

Earlier on Thursday, Blinken spoke on the phone with his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billström (M) about the NATO application.

"The Secretary of State reiterated the United States' strong support for the ratification of Sweden's accession to NATO without further delay," the U.S. State Department said in a press release.

Earlier this week, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German news agency DPA that he believes Sweden will become a member of NATO in July at the latest, when the defense alliance holds a summit.
