A vegetation fire, which broke out on Wednesday, was "stabilized" on Thursday morning after having covered 180 hectares on the heights of Barbaggio (Haute-Corse), without threatening any habitation, the prefecture of Haute-Corse said. "Firefighters worked all night to stabilize the fire, which is now being done," the prefecture said Thursday morning on X (ex-Twitter).

"In total, 180 hectares are burned, no homes are threatened, no injuries are to be deplored," she said. "Air resources will be mobilized in the early morning" and, "combined with ground resources, they will make it possible to definitively extinguish the fire," she said. The fire started at midday on Wednesday on the heights of Barbaggio before spreading to the surrounding maquis.

170 firefighters mobilized

Significant rescue resources were mobilised on Wednesday to contain the flames: 170 firefighters and soldiers as well as a water bomber helicopter from South Corsica were still in action on Thursday morning.

Traffic was still interrupted near the Teghime Pass, a thoroughfare close to the fire. On Wednesday evening, the smoke caused by the flames had even reached the city of Bastia, located a few dozen kilometers from the disaster. Haute-Corse is in yellow vigilance "wind" by Météo-France from Wednesday 18 hours to Thursday noon.
