At least 111 people have been killed and more than 200 injured after an earthquake in northwest China. The earthquake struck China's Gansu province on Monday night. Its epicenter, at a depth of 35 kilometers, was concentrated in an area bordering neighboring Qinghai and 102 kilometers from the provincial capital, Lanzhou.


The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported that a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the area had caused strong shaking, with extensive damage to infrastructure. The Chinese authorities, on the other hand, later published a slightly higher reading of magnitude 6.2.


Chinese media reported that a total of nine aftershocks were recorded at the same location on pre-dawn Tuesday. The Ministry of Emergency Management has already sent a rescue team to the area.


The number of missing is unknown at this time. The authorities have also explained that some water, electricity, transport, communications infrastructures were damaged, although for now they did not provide further details.
