The crime was committed in October 2020. Paty beheaded an 18-year-old man for displaying a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad. The killer was shot. Later, six teenagers were detained on suspicion of involvement in the crime.

They were sentenced to different terms. The shortest was 14 months, the longest was two years. For some, a probationary period was determined.

Paty's murder caused a wide public outcry in France. For example, Jean Castex, who was the country's prime minister at the time, said after these events that the threat of Islamist terrorism was high.
