Cameroon: Gabonese transitional president received by Paul Biya during a whirlwind visit

Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the transitional president and Gabonese head of state, was in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on Wednesday. The visit followed several meetings in recent months with the heads of state of the ECCAS sub-region. A tour that Gabon's new strongman has undertaken since taking power in Libreville. He spoke at length with Paul Biya, particularly on the political situation in Gabon.

With our correspondent in Yaoundé, Polycarpe Essomba.

The tête-à-tête between Paul Biya and Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the culmination of this whirlwind visit of the transitional president and Gabonese head of state to Cameroon, lasted a little more than two hours. The two statesmen, according to a source in the Cameroonian presidency, clearly had something to say to each other. But at the end of this long hearing, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema did not make any statement.

Some indiscretions gleaned from President Paul Biya's entourage have suggested that the internal situation in Gabon, since the fall of Ali Bongo Ondimba on August 30, has greatly concerned the Cameroonian president. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema returned to the motivations that led to the coup de force and presented the lines of work of the transition he is leading until the organization of the next democratic elections in this country.

The Cameroonian president is also said to have been concerned about the situation of the ousted president and his relatives, according to our source. An evaluation of the cooperation relations between the two countries, which share nearly 300 kilometres of common borders, was also carried out.

The talks were "cordial and fruitful," Biya himself said in a tweet after the hearing.

At the end of it, the photographers' shots captured the satisfied smile of the host of the day, whose visit, although brief, aroused a certain enthusiasm among the Yaoundé, curious to see the new strongman of Gabon. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema left Yaoundé at 19 p.m. for a direct return to Libreville.
