According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the owner of the animals let the herd out for a self-walk near the village of Metlino, but some horses wandered into the lake and fell through due to the immature ice.
"Employees of the Special Directorate of the Federal Border Service No. 1 of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia with the help of chainsaws, crowbars and axes cut a path more than 150 m long in the ice," the department said.
It is reported that rescuers took the exhausted horses along the trail and handed them over to the owner. The Ministry of Emergency Situations added that not all animals survived due to hypothermia.
Earlier it was reported that in Yakutia, two cars fell through the ice on the Lena River.
