The manifestation, which was organized by the Swedish Teachers and Municipal Workers' Union, took place outside a snowy community center in central Sala. And clear placards were erected in the sky to show the discontent and concern about the situation.

"We need to act. This affects our members and colleagues' work environment, and our students' schooling," says Marita Karlström Andersson, chair of the Swedish Association of Teachers in Sala.

The reason is partly to the proposal to close four schools and two preschools, but also to prevent further savings from affecting the teaching staff and students.

"It's important not to reduce the number of staff and increase the number of children. We are very concerned about this," continues Catharina Rothoff, chief safety representative at Kommunal in Sala.

"Think of the Children"

The Eriksson family was there with their placard with the clear message: "Think of the children".

"My father and I went to that school, now I want my children to be able to do the same. We live in the countryside so that we are close to a school out there where it is calmer for the children," says the father, Ola Eriksson.

No response from the mayor

However, there is no word yet from Sala's politicians about what they will do with the proposal from the school office. Municipal commissioner Amanda Lindblad (S) says that they have added SEK 100 million to the school over the next four years.

She goes on to say that the municipalities need to receive increased state grants in order to be able to invest further.

"We're really doing what we can to prioritise schools and other welfare services," says Amanda Lindblad.
