Ukraine: War continues, as snowstorms return

Fighting continues in the Donbass and southern Ukraine, while weather conditions have deteriorated sharply, with the first snowstorm of the winter hitting the south, centre and east of the country since Sunday 26 November. The Russian army continues to push in the region, around Avdiivka, while the Ukrainians try to sustain their presence east of Kherson and the Dnieper River.

As the blizzard blows across much of Ukraine, blanketing entire regions in snow, the front line in the south and east of the country is far from frozen yet. Hostilities continue, particularly around the town of Avdiivka, on the outskirts of Donetsk.

Over the weekend, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian forces had further gained ground, particularly in the north of the city, near the last motorable road to Avdiivka, but also in the south of the city, in the Promzone, an industrial zone that has been transformed into a fortress since 2014.

For the time being, the Ukrainian General Staff is content to affirm that military positions are being taken and retaken, according to the fighting, refusing to formalize any major setback. In the Kherson region, it is the Ukrainians who are at the helm, and by compiling the available information, it is understood that they are solidifying their presence on the left bank of the Dnieper.

Especially around the villages of Krinky and Korsunka where, according to a reputable Ukrainian military expert, they would be able to threaten the M14 highway, a major strategic axis for the logistics of the occupying Russian troops. However, in the coming days, the arrival of the white winter could limit the belligerents' ambitions.
