The World Food Programme (WFP) said on Thursday that 2.2 million people (the population of the Gaza Strip) needed urgent food assistance.

The UN agency said in a statement that hundreds of thousands of displaced people in Gaza were crammed into overcrowded shelters and hospitals as food and water ran out as a result of Israel's devastating 48-day war on the territory.

The sharp escalation of the conflict in Gaza has put the entire population in desperate and catastrophic conditions.

"We need a cessation of hostilities and safe access to food and fuel supplies so that we can conduct our operations inside Gaza as quickly as possible."

Food systems are collapsing in Gaza, while the last bakery we worked with was closed because of running out of fuel or gas.

Since Oct. 7, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on Gaza that has left more than 14,532 dead – including more than 6,4 children and 35,<> women – as well as more than <>,<> wounded, according to official sources in Gaza.

During the same period, Israel cut off supplies of water, food, medicine, electricity and fuel to the territory's 2.2 million residents, who have been under an Israeli blockade since 2006.
