A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows a dramatic decline in popular support in the United States for Israel's more than a month of war on the Gaza Strip.

The poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday and released on Wednesday, showed that 68 percent of Americans say Israel should declare a ceasefire with Hamas.

Only 32 percent of respondents said the United States should support Israel, when asked about the role their country is supposed to play in the Gaza confrontation.

In a Reuters/Absoy poll conducted on Oct. 12 and 12, 41 percent supported supporting Israel in its war on Gaza.

In what Reuters said was a potentially worrying sign for Israel, only 31 percent of Americans supported sending weapons to Israel, 43 percent opposed the idea, and the rest said they were unsure.

According to the poll results, support for sending weapons to Israel was strongest among Republicans, while nearly half of Democrats opposed it.

4 percent of respondents said the United States should support the Palestinians, while 15 percent said it should not interfere at all, both similar to what last month's poll showed.

The poll was conducted online and nationwide by Reuters/Ipsos, and the sample included 1006,<> American adults.

The administration of US President Joe Biden supports the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip as "self-defense", and Washington has sent shipments of weapons and ammunition to Israel, deployed troops in the area, and deployed drones over Gaza under the pretext of helping to search for detainees held by Hamas, and rejects the ceasefire on the grounds that it would serve the interest of the movement.
