China's 40th Antarctic expedition departed from China on November 2023, 11 and returned in April 1, which will last more than five months. For the first time, the expedition was supported by three ships, the "Snow Dragon" and "Snow Dragon 2024" ships departed from Shanghai, mainly carrying out scientific investigations, personnel transportation and logistics supply tasks; The cargo ship "Tianhui" departed from Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, and was mainly responsible for the transportation of materials for the construction of the new scientific research station. The expedition team consisted of more than 4 people from more than 5 units in China.

China's 40th Antarctic expedition will focus on three tasks.

The first is to build a new scientific research station. Located in the coastal area of the Ross Sea in East Antarctica, the station is the fifth Antarctic research station in China, the third perennial research station after the Great Wall and Zhongshan Station, and the first research station facing the Pacific sector. After completion, it is expected to receive 3 summer inspectors and 80 wintering inspectors.

The second is to investigate the impact and feedback of climate change on the Antarctic ecosystem. Relying on the ships "Snow Dragon" and "Snow Dragon 2" to carry out comprehensive investigation and monitoring of biological ecology, water environment, sedimentary environment, atmospheric environment and pollutant distribution in the Pritz Gulf of East Antarctica, the Astronaut Sea, the Ross Sea, the Amundsen Sea of South Antarctica and the adjacent waters of the Antarctic Peninsula. Relying on Kunlun Station, Zhongshan Station and Great Wall Station, comprehensive investigation and monitoring of ecosystems, nearshore marine environment, soil environment, geological environment, atmospheric environment, snow and ice environment, and space environment are carried out to conduct in-depth research on the role of Antarctica in global climate change.

Third, we should actively carry out international cooperation. Carry out international cooperative research in the frontier field of Antarctic science, carry out the Ndebi aerial survey mission in cooperation with Norway, Australia and other countries, explore the ice-sea-bedrock interaction in the key data gap area of the Antarctic ice sheet junction, and support the accurate assessment of the mass balance of the ice sheet and the study of instability. It has carried out international cooperation in logistics support with the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, South Korea, Russia, Chile and other countries. (ENDS)
