The cast of the series 'Friends' is "totally devastated" by the death of Matthew Perry. This was expressed by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer in a statement published by 'People' magazine on Monday.

"We were more than colleagues. We were a family," the text reads, the first expression of condolences from the protagonists of the series with Perry. "There is so much to say, but for now we will take some time to grieve and process this immeasurable loss," the statement added.

"We'll say more later, when we can ... For now our thoughts and love are with Matty's family, his friends and all the people who loved him."

"Friends" chronicled the lives of six New Yorkers going through adult life, their love stories and their careers over ten years. It was a mainstay of NBC programming in the 1990s and early 2000s and was seen around the world.

The cast reunited for a reunion episode in 2021, during which Perry raised concerns about his speech difficulties and surprised his co-stars by admitting to suffering "every night" from severe anxiety episodes during filming.

The actor was born in Massachusetts in 1969, and was raised between Montreal and Los Angeles after the separation of his parents, an American actor and a Canadian journalist who was press secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

He was nominated for five Emmy Awards, two for guest appearances on "The West Wing," though he was never awarded any prestigious television awards.

Perry, who never married, recounted his health problems and addictions in his memoir "Friends, Lovers, and the Terrible Thing," published last year.
