Last summer, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service announced that it was investigating parts of Frösö beach for conversion into an institution. In a press release on Tuesday, the municipality announced that the construction plans will take place in the premises that were previously used for psychiatric care, housing for asylum seekers and HVB homes.

"The new prison brings valuable and long-term jobs to the county, and it is also an important addition to the judicial chain," says Niklas Daoson (S), chairman of the municipal board in Östersund.

Closed institution

The prison will provide space for about 80 inmates, but will also investigate whether it is possible to get more. The aim is for the prison to be completed in October 2025. Before you can get started, you need to add to existing buildings to be able to run a safe prison operation. This includes building fences around the area.

The prison will be in security class 2, i.e. a closed prison with obstacles to escape and escape.
