The mayor of Roales del Pan, David García, a municipality in the alfoz of Zamora where the young woman died on Monday due to an attack by herding dogs, has linked the event to the proliferation of wolves in the area.

David García has pointed out, in statements to the media, that dogs have "their instincts", especially when they are from the countryside and have "extra work" due to the proliferation of wildlife.

A 27-year-old woman dies after being attacked by dogs in Zamora

Arancha Corcero Girón, 27, was a nurse at the Corrales del Vino Health Center, and was attacked by a group of five sheepdogs - three mastiffs and two Leonese sheepdogs - when she went for a walk along the road that connects her village, Roales del Pan, with La Hiniesta, according to El Diario de Castilla y León. Arancha was walking while talking to her mother on the phone when fate wanted her to come across a group of dogs without their owner.

"Mom, the dogs are coming, mom the dogs are coming," she shouted repeatedly when the animals jumped on her, at that moment the connection with her mother was lost, the newspaper adds.

"Here we have a much stronger wildlife, especially wolves and the wolf alters the normal behavior of these animals," he added, referring to the dogs that killed the young woman from the municipality.

In the same way, he has maintained that the behaviours of animals are changing more and more "as a result of an excessive wolf population".

In spite of everything, he has also shown his surprise that the dogs attacked the young woman, who weighed about sixty kilos, in such a way.

He also wondered where the owner was when the attack took place and recalled the obligation for him to be with the dogs when they were outside the fence.

David García has assured that the town of 1,000 inhabitants of which he is mayor is shocked and people are afraid, despite the fact that the dogs of the attack are already "retained and isolated as established by the protocol of the Junta" and Seprona has verified that there are no others loose in the environment.

The owner, a cattle rancher, refuses to testify

The Guardia Civil, which located the animals and their owner on Monday night, read the animals' microchips and took samples of the dentures.

Four of the five animals had chips, cards and vaccinations. The cattle rancher invoked his right not to testify before the Civil Guard on Tuesday as he is being investigated for a crime of reckless homicide.
