The company Ilmatar Solar has been granted permission to build solar cells at two locations in Småland – Elenshylte in Alvesta municipality and Knihult in Älmhult.

Both parks will be large – according to the application, each will produce more electricity than the largest solar park in Sweden today.

Both sites are former peat extraction sites and, according to the County Administrative Board's decision, the construction does not affect any known natural or cultural values.

The cables to the solar cells will be laid in the peat extraction ditches, which will then be filled in.

"Instead of producing peat, the old quarries will now be restored to wetlands and produce sustainable, fossil-free energy," says Christian Gustafsson, CEO of Ilmatar Solar, in a press release.

Construction will begin in early 2024.
