More than 2,000 dead and 9,000 injured after a string of earthquakes in Afghanistan

Today's earthquake took place in the northwest of the province of Herat, in the west of the country, where last weekend a series of earthquakes destroyed a score of villages, leaving more than 4,500 victims in total.

This earthquake was followed by two others of 5.0 and 4.1 magnitude, with very close epicenters.

This new tremor and aftershocks occur after the earthquakes of magnitude 6.3 that shook western Afghanistan last Saturday, affecting especially the district of Zindah Khan, located in the homonymous province of Herat.

An estimated 12,110 people, including 1,730 families, were affected by the quake in five districts of Herat province where the tremors occurred, according to data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The Taliban government estimates that some 4,500 were killed or injured by the quake, although they say it is very difficult to say how many of these people are dead and how many are injured. Rescue teams are still recovering bodies from the rubble.

Last weekend's devastation left some 20 villages destroyed. It is the third deadliest earthquake to hit the Asian country since 1998 and the worst since the Taliban takeover in mid-August 2021.
