The German Society for Nutrition said that the Mediterranean diet maintains eye health and protects it from various diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.

The Mediterranean diet is based on fresh vegetables and fruits and fish rich in vitamins A, C and E and omega-3 fatty acids that are important for eye health.

She added that green leafy vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, peppers, carrots, broccoli, beets, and citrus fruits contain carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which increase the density of macular pigment in the eye, thus improving vision.

These pigments also absorb high-energy short-wave light, thus protecting the retina from harmful photochemical reactions.

Zinc

Whole grains contain zinc, which is involved in retinal metabolism.

Besides healthy nutrition, the association stated that fluids should also be drunk in sufficient quantity to protect the eyes from dehydration, and for this purpose should drink at least two liters per day, preferably water and unsweetened tea.

Regular exercise and motor activities, especially endurance sports such as running, swimming and cycling, should also be maintained, as they stimulate blood circulation.

It is also important to quit smoking, as it damages the small blood vessels, which supply the optic nerve.

It is also necessary to work on the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and lipid disorders, as they cause serious damage to the eye.
