The honorary citizens are appointed by the Presidium of the City Council. Chairperson Marie-Louise Rönnmark highlights Emmanuelle Charpentier as an important role model for the municipality's young people.
– A person who creates faith in the future by showing that we live in a place that gives us both opportunities and space to achieve our goals, even the seemingly impossible, says Rönnmark in a press release.
Fifth honorary citizen
The last time Umeå received a new honorary citizen was in 2012, in the form of Millennium author Stieg Larsson. Anita Ingegerd Gradin, Gunnar Nordahl and Lars Widding are also among the selected group.
