Right now, Sweden's environmental objectives days are being held in Borlänge where experts, officials and politicians gather to discuss the country's set environmental quality goals.

Today, Sweden only achieves the goal of a protective ozone layer – we miss the remaining environmental goals. Three goals are close to being achieved, but in four others the development is assessed as negative.

Demands more from decision makers

Critics, including Andreas Magnusson, who is involved in Fridays for future and project manager for Climate Live Sweden, believe that current environmental goals are insufficient and that more is required from decision-makers.

"It is disappointing for me and others involved that we have had environmental goals set since the 90s, and still have not managed to act on what we have known," he says.

Concrete proposals to the Government

Following the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's latest evaluation of the environmental objectives, the agency submitted a number of proposals to the government.

– Among other things, we emphasized that a faster green transition is needed and that climate and biodiversity need to be prioritized in policy, says Karin Hogstrand, administrator for the environmental goals at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

"This is just one of many deliveries where we provide objective information about how the state of the environment is developing and what we believe we need to do," she continues.
