Zoleka Mandela, activist, writer and granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, died on Monday at the age of 43 from cancer in different parts of her body, her family announced today.

"Zoleka passed away on the afternoon of Monday, September 25, surrounded by friends and family," the Mandela family said in a statement released Tuesday on Instagram.

The activist had been admitted to the hospital on Monday 18 to "follow a treatment of metastatic cancer in the hip, liver, lungs, pelvis, brain and spinal cord."

The statement said recent scans had revealed "significant disease progression, including pulmonary fibrosis and several emboli (blood clots)."
