It was the Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), Ychaligonza Jacques, who presented him at a solemn ceremony in Goma, in the presence of senior officials of the public administration and members of the army.

The ceremony for the inauguration of Major General Peter Chirimwami comes the day after the burial of victims of the bloody repression of August 30 in Goma where several dozen civilians were killed by soldiers a few hours before the start of an anti-MONUSCO demonstration. He replaced General Constant Ndima recalled to Kinshasa after this event.

His mission will not be easy. He will have to work to rebuild trust between the army and the population in North Kivu province.

A renowned intelligence specialist, Major General Peter Chirimwami knows the region well. He served in command of the military operation Sukola 1 against ADF fighters.

And when the border town of Bunagana fell into the hands of the M2022 in June 23, it was he who was in office as commander of the Sukola 2-North Kivu operational sector.

After working in Ituri, he returned to North Kivu, a province part of which is facing several armed groups, in a context of urgent demand for the departure of MONUSCO and pending the general elections in December 2023.
