Moscow, 9 Sep (ZXS) -- Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on 19 September that the Kremlin is worried about the sharp escalation of the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) region. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced on the 19th the beginning of a "local anti-terrorist operation" in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, "disarming the Armenian army and ensuring its withdrawal from Azerbaijani territory" and launching strikes on Armenian military facilities, thereby "restoring the constitutional order of Azerbaijan." For its part, the Armenian Ministry of Defense stressed that no Asian armed forces were deployed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, and accused the Afghan military operation of "large-scale aggression" and "an attempt to complete the policy of ethnic cleansing."

Peskov said that the Russian side is worried about the sharp escalation of tension and the outbreak of fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Russian side is in contact with Azerbaijan and Armenia on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. He called on both sides to abide by the tripartite statement previously signed.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharova said on the same day that Russia was deeply shocked by the sharp escalation of the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Russian side urges all parties to the conflict to stop the bloodshed, immediately stop military operations and return to a political and diplomatic solution.

Zakharova said that the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a series of trilateral statements between 2020 and 2022, which set out all measures for the peaceful settlement of relevant disputed issues. She stressed that under the current situation, Russian peacekeeping forces will continue to carry out their own tasks.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported on the same day that Russian peacekeeping forces recorded several violations of the ceasefire agreement by the Afghan side on the contact line in the Nagorno-Karabakh area on the same day. The command of the Russian peacekeeping forces urged the parties to the conflict to immediately cease fire, take measures to de-escalate the situation and continue to promote the negotiation process.

After the collapse of the former Soviet Union, war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the ownership of the Nagorno-Karabakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) region. Although the two countries reached a comprehensive ceasefire agreement in 1994, they have been in a state of hostility over the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and armed conflicts have occurred from time to time.
