In 14 min 00 sec 21/100, Tsegay (26), shaved nearly 5 seconds off the record set by Kenyan Faith Kipyegon in Paris in June (14:05.20).

Perfectly led by the pace leaders and guided by the "wavelight" (luminous technology at the edge of the track), Tsegay finished alone after having managed to catch in her wake the Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, herself very close to the old record (14:05.92).

Kipyegon, unbeaten this season and world champion of the distance in Hungary, was not competing in the race after winning the 1,500m on Saturday.

At 26, Tsegay set a second world record, while she holds the indoor 1,500m (3:53.09 in Liévin in 2021).

The Ethiopian had triumphed in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Budapest last month but cracked in the final of the 5,000m (13th). She was crowned world champion of the distance in 2022 on the same track of Hayward field, after taking Olympic bronze in Tokyo in 2021.

"I was clearly aiming for the world record today. My first goal was at the Worlds, but I suffered a leg in the 5,000m final. I didn't sleep any. And that motivated me for today, I'm happy," she said.

After his victory over the mile (about 1,609 m) on Saturday, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the 3,000 m on Sunday in 7 min 23 sec 63/100, the third time in the history of this discipline not contested in the championship.
