One-third of the fractures sustained in the accidents required surgery. Björn Hernefalk, who was one of the researchers in the study, believes that electric scooter accidents are a burden on an already strained emergency medical care.

More injuries than the survey shows

Björn Hernefalk emphasizes that the data for the research was taken from the Swedish Fracture Register. So all types of injuries that occur in electric scooter accidents are not included, only bone fractures.

Between April 2019 and December 2022, 1,874 fractures were recorded – 40 per cent of them forearm injuries.

– Other types of injuries, such as head injuries, injuries of the chest, abdomen, lacerations. We do not see them in this register. So those injuries are there too.
