Senegal: the government announces the dissolution of the party of the opponent Ousmane Sonko

The Senegalese government announced on Monday the dissolution of the party of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, less than two hours after his indictment and detention on charges of "calls for insurrection and conspiracy" against the state.

The Pastef political party is dissolved by decree," Interior Minister Antoine Diome said in a statement, justifying his decision by his "frequent" calls for "insurrectional movements" that he said caused many deaths in March 2021 and June 2023.
