It is not yet known what kind of electronics will be supplied to the vehicles sent to the Ukrainian army, but "a simpler option is better suited given time constraints," said Marina Miron, a researcher at the Department of War Studies at King's College London.

The electronics of the M1A2 tanks are "more advanced", which gives advantages to the crew, especially the gunner and commander, she stressed.

"However, these systems are more complex and require more training and support," Miron acknowledged.

For this reason, M1A1 is the best choice for use in Ukraine, the article notes.

The newspaper Politico previously wrote that the US authorities intend to begin deliveries of American Abrams tanks to Ukraine in September.
