US Federal Judge Elaine Cannon ordered the trial of former US President Donald Trump in the classified documents case to begin in mid-May 2024.

The judge set the date following a closely followed pre-trial hearing on Tuesday.

The judge also set the jury selection date for May 14 and said the trial would then begin on May 20 and span two weeks.

The judge rejected Justice Department efforts to impeach Trump in December, as well as Trump's request to postpone his trial until after the next presidential election in 2024.

Trump faces 37 counts of deliberately keeping classified documents after his term ends and obstructing justice.

Neutral body

Trump has called for the start of his trial to be postponed until after the next presidential election, arguing that his candidacy in this election will make it difficult to choose a neutral jury.

The U.S. news site Axios said the trial would likely begin after the Republican nominee was announced among a large number of candidates, and as the general election began to heat up.

The Florida trial is one of several legal obligations piling up to Trump's 2024 election cycle, including cases involving his company, accusations of defamation, paying money to keep silent and silencing a star years ago.

Trump is also under federal and state criminal investigations in connection with efforts to invalidate the 2020 election results.
