A recent study shows that nearly 5 billion people, more than 60% of the world's population, use social media.

That's a 3.7 percent increase from a year ago, according to calculations by digital consultancy Kepius in its latest quarterly report.

The number of social network users now exceeds the number of Internet users of 5.19 billion, which constitutes 64.5% of the world's population.

There is considerable disparity between regions of the world, with only one in 11 people in East and Central Africa using social media.

In India, which this year officially became the world's most populous country, the proportion touches one in three people.

The study also showed an increase in the amount of time users spend on social media by an average of two minutes, to become two hours and 26 minutes per day.
