Warholm, very fit, thus managed the best world time of the season, for a hundredth ahead of his own time in Oslo at the beginning of June (46.52). He had run only once faster in his career: in 45.94 seconds to dominate a legendary Olympic final in Tokyo in 2021.

"It shows that I'm in good shape, exactly as I hoped. I had another very good race today, which I'm proud of," said the Norwegian. "My form is improving, it's perfect. Running a little faster every race is ideal, it shows that my level of consistency is higher than ever, it means that I have a good chance of running faster in a major championship."

Brazilian world champion Alison Dos Santos took 2nd place in Monaco in 47.66 seconds, an encouraging time for her first 400m hurdles of the season after suffering a knee injury this winter.

Fourth, Frenchman Ludvy Vaillant broke his personal best (47.85). Wilfried Happio took 5th place in 48.25 seconds.
